Miss Chinese International News *translated by Gida (thanks!)
2004 Miss Chinese International is going to be held on 17th Jan in HK. Delegates from all over the world have arrived in HK. Yesterday, together with HK's representative Mandy Cho, the contestants officially met the press. The contestants will leave for Dalian for location and shootings this saturday. This year's MCI awards include: 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, Miss Friendship and Miss Beautiful Smile (literally: Smiling expression flower-like face), a total of 5 awards. Prize money and items valuing at $1,500,000. (!)

-High academic qualification but also higher age-
Out of the 21 contestants, most of them have attained University level education. Amanda Ong from Melbourne is a doctor; Siu Bei Ling from Taihiti has a master degree. Hence most contestants' ages tend to be higher. Among them, Taipei, Auckland, Chicago are all 25. There are also a lot of 23s and 24s. The youngest contestant is NY, who is 17. Aside from having high education, the quality of the contestants are very decent also. For example: Vivien Yeo, LA, Auckland, Sarina and Mandy Cho. They are all favourites among the press.

Hsu Ching Kit is the representative of L.A.. She was born in Shanghai and immigrated to USA when she was 13. In regard to people saying she looks like Japanese actress Takako Tokiwa, Hsu said no one has never said that to her before, but she is still happy about it. As for being regarded as a big favourite, does she think she has a chance of winning? She smiled and said, "Winning and losing is up to the judges, but I will do my best. Even so, winning and losing is not that important to me. Because I get to learn a lot during the pageant (Is there a particular contestant that you think has a good chance?) I think they are all very strong delegates. They all have their own style."

-Mandy Cho praises the high quality of the contestants-
Sarina hails from Toronto. She is a HK citizen, but she immigrated to Toronto when she was 7. Her family is still residing in Canada. When asked why she didn't try out for MHK, she explained she doesn't have time because she has to concentrate on her schoolwork. She is now majoring in Commerce and it is her ambition to become a chartered accountant. When mentioned that Mandy Cho was browsing for contestants picture on the internet and praised Sarina for her beauty, Sarina smiles and says thank you and also praises Mandy back, calling Mandy a beauty. Among all the contestants, Sarina is the only person that can communicate with Mandy in Cantonese. Adding to the fact that their contestant number is right next to each other and have to seat side by side all the time. They are getting along very well.

HK representative Mandy Cho feels that the quality of this year's contestants is not bad at all. Being with the girls, she jokes that she always needs to 'change channel' (ie, switching language) and there had been times when she couldn't switch fast enough. English is the main language she uses right now. Mandy has moved into the hotel with the other contestants and when asked if her confidence is affected due to the high quality of the girls, Mandy smiles and says, "I have always been confident about myself."

-Sonija, Tiffany's younger schoolmate takes part in the pageant-
Linda Chung, from Vancouver, according to official information is 20, however, she claimed to be 19 when she was introducing herself. She explained that it is because she filled out the form incorrectly. She was born on 9th April 1984. She is 19 yr old, 2nd year in Uni, and she wants to be a teacher. It was mentioned that the school she went to produced a lot of MHK and MCI, for example Sonija Kwok, Tiffany Lam (think the reporter made a mistake. Tiffany is from San Francisco, not Vancouver) and Bernice Liu, etc. Does that make her more confident? Linda said she is confident and she knows about these older girls, but she doesn't think they know her.

As for Amanda Ong from Melbourne, she is now 24, and is a qualified General practiioner (like a normal doctor), but she claims that she is also interested in trying out other fields, for example being an actress.

Miss Chinese International News - arrival *translated by Ennis
The delegates have arrived in Hong Kong! The first batch includes representatives from Germany, Kuala Lumpur, New York, Singapore, and Toronto. They are said to be very sweet and young, with Miss Kuala Lumpur and Singapore standing out at first glance due to their statuesque figures (both standing at 5’8”).

A lot of pressure is heavily weighted on Miss Kuala Lumpur (Vivien Yeo)’s shoulders as last year’s Miss Kuala Lumpur Rachel Tan is the current Miss Chinese International 2003. But Vivien says she hasn’t thought of winning and it is the experience that is important. Miss Frankfurt (Vivian Tran), wearing a smashing white sweater revealed it is her 4th trip to HK and is obviously very excited this time around. Vivian has done some preparations before this event. Like Mandy and many of the other delegates, she has read up information regarding the other delegates on the Internet.

Miss Singapore (Cassandra Wee) is said to resemble Marianne Chan and attention was placed on her hoola hoop which she will use to practice for the talent segment. Miss New York (Lien Xian) is likely the youngest delegate this year. Lien is 17 yrs old and is a high school student as well as part-time model. Miss New York also revealed that she knows a make-up artist who knows Miss HK, Mandy Cho & says the two look-alike. Too much alcohol for the Yankee makeup artist? The two reps. From HK & NY are beautiful in their own ways.

Miss LA (Chui Ching Kit), is said to resemble Japanese celebrity Takako Tokiwa. We have no information regarding this delegate except she will be #8 & that she was born in Shanghai whilst speaking fluent Mandarin.

#16 Miss Toronto (Sarina Lee) was earlier noted by Miss HK (Mandy Cho), as being one of the most outstanding girls of the competition. The 19 yr old as some of us already know, emigrated from HK & is currently attending the Univ. of Toronto hoping to obtain her CA license someday. Sarina also mentioned she is becoming fast friends w/ Mandy.

Miss Chinese International News
It's that time of the year again! MCI 2004 will be held on January 17, with 21 representatives from worldwide participating in the event. The delegates are due to arrive in HK on the 27th of December & are scheduled to travel to Macau for New Years before arriving in Dalian, China for filming. Miss Toronto, Melbourne, Vancouver are scheduled to arrive around that time.

The artists for location filming will include Leo Ku as well as Miriam Yeung, while guest singers during the finals will be Cecilia Cheung, Jordan Chan & Andy Hui. It was also hinted the choice of MCs may be a little different as compared to previous years. Perhaps Eric Tsang will not be included again? The theme this year will also have something to do with flowers. I'm sure there will be LOVELY costumes made from fur, lace, and other goodies Karen Chan or others have up their sleeves.

Meanwhile, Mandy has been busy preparing herself for the MCI pageant. For her talent, she will be demonstrating Taijiquan & has been taking lessons from Li Hui. Mandy is said to be very confident, but hopes of winning will rely on her performance during the finals, and the private interviews. The other delegates have not arrived yet but Mandy revealed that she has seen all their pictures online & felt Miss Toronto Sarina Lee is very outstanding. She will have a tough time beating out not only Miss Toronto, as this yr's competition seems to be quite fierce. Malaysian queens have placed in the top 5 for quite sometime, while securing the #1 position last year when Rachel Tan (MCI '03) situated herself to victory. Calgary has a beautiful rep, & Vancouver's Linda Chung bagged 4 awards at her national pageant, including the Talent award. Miss Manila has participated at the Miss Earth pageant, Miss Melbourne is a physician, while Miss Montreal is said to be pure elegance and class. This year's batch also seems to be quite tall in height, as the majority (so far) are above 5'6". For the list of contestants, click here.

Ireland's Rosanna Davison was crowned Miss World on Saturday in this southern Chinese beach resort, while second place went to Miss Canada, Nazanin Afshin-Jam.

The host country's Miss China, Guan Qi, placed third in the competition that saw 106 contestants seeking the Miss World title.

The 19-year-old Davison — daughter of Chris De Burgh, the singer best known for his 1995 hit Lady in Red — accepted her tiara with minimum fuss, waving calmly to the audience as the other contestants hugged and kissed her while gold confetti was fired out of a mock cannon.

"I was just so thrilled about being placed in the top five," Davison said afterward, grinning broadly. "I didn't think I'd get this far." She also won the "Beach Beauty" award.

"I'm seriously proud of her," said De Burgh of his daughter, who wore a fuchsia dress for the competition.

A spokesman for Miss World Canada said he was thrilled to see 24-year-old Afshin-Jam take runner-up in the pageant.

"Nazanin is an ideal example of a Canadian," Jimmy Steele, a vice-president of Miss World Canada, said from Toronto. "She is articulate, educated, well-rounded and a fantastic individual."

Afshin-Jam, who was born in Iran and now lives in Vancouver, holds degrees from the University of British Columbia in international relations and political science. She is studying broadcast journalism and wants to be a foreign correspondent.

The contestants' bright smiles never faltered as they sashayed and twirled across the stage in outfits of every hue during the tightly scheduled two-hour event, which marked China's entry into the beauty pageant scene.

The competition will be held again in China next year, although the city hasn't been decided, said Miss World President Julia Morley.

"Why not China again? There's so much to see here, there's so much to do," Morley said. "Already it's placed Sanya on the map, and now we have to look to see whether we continue going down that road or look for a new place to develop."

It won't be the first time that Miss World will be held in the same country two years in a row. South Africa played host five years running, Morley said.

There were no signs of disruptions, unlike last year when the pageant was hastily moved to London from Nigeria following deadly fights between Muslims and Christians.

The rioting erupted after a Nigerian newspaper suggested the Muslim prophet Muhammad would have approved of the Miss World pageant and might have wanted to marry a contestant.

"When I was a child, I watched Miss World on television and thought, `There were a lot of fantastic girls, but no Miss China,' " said second runner-up Guan, 21, who wore a red gown embroidered with gold dragons.

"I'm happy I could make it happen."

Earlier on stage, the fashion designer from the country's northeast Jilin province fired up the crowd with a patriotic, "I love you, China!"

Hours before the competition began, hundreds of people lined the streets in hopes of catching a glimpse of the contestants outside the tiara-shaped convention hall built specially for the event at a cost of $15.5 million Cdn.

"They're so beautiful," said Wu Chang, one of four 18-year-old friends who attend college nearby and who planned their outing to Sanya a month ago. "It's a luxury if we see them."

Miss Chinese Melbourne Results
WINNER: #4 Amanda Ong
1st RU:
#11Karen Ye
2nd RU: #9 Jennifer Wu
Miss Photogenic: #11Karen Ye
Miss Charitable: #5 Ee Ping So
Miss Friendship: #3 Lisa Huynh

WINNER Amanda Ong is 24 yrs old & measures at 5'3.5". This intelligent lady has already completed her Bachelor of Medicine as well as Bachelor of SugeryEducation, making her a certified doctor...or at least one in waiting. Her hobbies include a few water extreme sports. #6 Christine who was a favourite among the web (as well as a favorite of MHKB) did not advance in the top 3. Her performance was said to be very well & no one is sure where she lost out on, but perhaps she lacked the support that #4 Amanda had to offer.

As for the Miss Charitable award, what a lucky break for the unlikest candidate of the group, it is given to the delegate who raised the most amount of money for 'charity' during the finals. One of those awards in which if you want it...work for it! ...Sure this is an award to be proud (as well as the top 3 placements) but it seems like the Miss Friendship award has more meaningfulness behind it. Firstly, you don't get to keep a plastic crown, but you'll have a trophy. Friendships will last for a while..and in some cases, a lifetime & theres a trophy to show for it. How rewarding is that?

Another interesting note are the kay paos used...FOR THE 13TH-15TH YEAR IN A ROW. One would also wonder if they've been washed considering how many people have worn them. If the MCM org. decided to cut down on these costs, why not let the girls design/buy their own dress. They have looked outdated for the longest time. From the image above, it is clear that 2nd RU Jennifer WU is wearing the dress that MCM'02 Tanya Rattray wore on her coronation night, While 1st RU Karen is wearing the blue dress Amanda Boll wore at her coronation. Interesting note, Tanya Rattray was choosing between the navy & yellow dress last year! And although not pictured here, #3 Lisa wore last year's #2 Melissa Hiah's dress, and #6 Christine wore last year's 2nd RU Jacqui Lee's pink dress....and the list continues! Interested in comparing the kay pao pictures from decades ago? Check out Angela's website...the only website available for Miss Melbourne. 2002 Kay pao parade, 1988 kay pao.

Will Amanda Ong be accepted better than 2002 Winner Tanya in HK? Tanya could only speak a handful of Mandarin yet Amanda doesnt even know an Asian language....yet. If MCM truly wants a candidate to succeed at MCI in January, perhaps they should go over where they went wrong in the past. They need someone with intelligence, beauty, popularity and the package. Does Amanda have these qualities? Will she succeed at MCI? We shall find out in January!
