  • MISS CHINESE MONTREAL 2007 *Special thanks to Jimmy for the link :)
Miss Chinese Montreal was crowned last weekend. The winner is 17 year old Health Science student Ting Jia Lorigiano. She is of Chinese & Italian decent.

    Translated from Cyberpresse

Q - Why did you sign up for a Chinese beauty pageant?
A - My mom saw the ad for it in the newspaper. She thought it was a great way to learn about my Chinese roots.

    Q - By modeling a swimsuit ?
A - I consider myself to be a feministe. Sure, there's something ironic about that. However a beauty contest is not just about beauty. It's also about the people you meet and the experiences you have. The swimsuit is just a way to show that you feel good in your own skin; that you accept yourself.

Q - Your win earns you a ticket to Miss Chines International in HK this January. This is the same contest that allowed Christy Chung to becoming a giant HK film star. What are your expectations?
A - When I was younger, I dreamed of being an actress. But for now, I'm focusing on school.

Q - You're half Chinese, half Italian. How do you live this bicultural identity?
A - It's the mix of races that helps me find balance. Depending on the context, I could be one background or the other. When I'm out in public, the Chinese personality comes out, in the way I smile and not judging a book by its cover. When I play soccer, however, I become extremely proud and competitive!

Q - What language do you use at home?
A - My mother speaks to me in Chinese, and I answer her in English. I do my studies in French and I take Italian classes on Saturdays. Really, I'm just a typical Montrealer!

Q - Do you have any spare time at all?
A - In my free time, I play the saxophone. In elementary school, I played the flute very well. The sax was a logical next step. Do you know John Coltrane?

Q - Do you watch any TV?
A - Hmm... Absolutely "Numb3rs". It's a mystery series based on math on CBS. Oh my God, I'm such a nerd! But I can't help it, I love to learn. A nerd who is also a beauty queen - weird, isn't it?
