  • A TAN TO DIE FOR *Herald Sun
Former Miss Chinese Melbourne 1999 & Miss Chinese University contestant Clare Oliver talks abouts about her battle with melanoma.

    ****************
    I AM at peace.

But if I could go back and talk to myself when I was 19 I would tell that girl not to use a solarium -- that melanoma is not a small cancer that you just have cut out and you will be fine. I may pass in another week or it could be two. If I really fight it out, I may even have six weeks left. It's scary, because I feel myself getting more tired, and each time I feel sleepy it worries me that I might not wake up.

So far I have lived 25 years. If I am lucky I will reach 26 because my birthday is on Saturday. It is a short life, but I have lived it. Subconsciously I did know that cancer was involved with solariums because I was aware of UV A and UV B rays.

But when I was 19, I saw a cheap offer of "buy 10 sessions and get 20".

  • KELLY MENG REPRESENTING MELBOURNE AT MCI 2008 ? Courtesy of Charlene & Angela
Miss Chinese Community Quest, the annual Miss Chinese Melbourne pageant will not be held this year. Organizers decided that the quest is too late in the year for CYSM, as the quest is followed too closely by Chinese New Year and becomes too hectic for their members. It will be moved closer to mid year, so that activities are spread out. Therefore MCCQ will not be held this year and if all goes to plan, it will be starting again early 2008.

According to Charlene from Miss Chinese Interviews, Kelly Meng will be representing Melbourne at MCI 2008.

Although Kelly was also a contestant at MCM 2006, she entered in another pageant called Miss Chinese University. It was only revealed during the coronation that Kelly would be competing at MCI!

Kelly is 19 years old & stands at 5'10". She was one of the big favourites at last year's MCM pageant but alas was unplaced.

It was said that many thought the eventual 1st RU or 2nd RU would win the Miss Chinese University title, as the 1st RU Su Ching won all 4 subsidery awards & was a heavy favourite. 2nd RU Kelly Siew was a talented singer who performs at many Chinese functions in Melbourne.

    Sour Grapes or truth?
It was later revealed by some contestant(s) that Kelly never turned up at rehearsals, and during finals she made a few errors during her talent. Her talent was also done with two other contestants, a sing & dance of "Lose My Breath". It was said she did not sing at all as she joined the very last minute since she was never at rehersals.

In the end, the judges chose Kelly as 1st RU Su Ching was apparently too short while 2nd RU Kelly Siew was not yet a PR or citizen.
