  • A NOVEL APPROACH *By Anansa Jacob, Sun2surf
Two weeks after winning the Miss Astro Chinese International 2006 title, Novel Lim Siew Theng, a 21-year-old student, is still wide-eyed and excited. The Ipoh lass will be going to Hong Kong in January to represent Malaysia in the Miss Chinese International Pageant 2007.

In real life, Lim is frank and down-to-earth. Asked why she entered the competition, she answers: "I did it for the experience and also the opportunity to learn something new. It would be something fun to remember later in life."

Her family was surprised at her decision but supported her nonetheless. Despite that, the independent Lim travelled from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur on her own to take part.

To dedicate time to the competition, she deferred the final semester of her course, a professional certificate in marketing.

"I had the full support of my lecturers, but I will continue my course next September," she says. "I believe that no matter what, you should finish your studies. A degree gives you confidence, besides the added knowledge. An education also means people respect you more."

Lim has many fond memories of the competition, namely of the academy where all 10 finalists lived and trained together. There, she became friends with fellow finalists Huang Mei Si and Goey Yu Thing. "We still keep in touch, even though the competition's over," Lim says.

Besides the title, she was also named Miss Photogenic, a bonus that took her by surprise. "The photographer did praise me during the photo shoot sessions, but winning that title was totally unexpected."

Since then, her time has been taken up by interviews, but Lim also makes sure to spend time with her family whilst also preparing for the upcoming pageant.

Lim says: "I have to maintain my figure, and have started reading up about Hong Kong, in case they ask some general knowledge questions during the competition."

The health-conscious Lim, who performed yoga exercises during the pageant's talent session, explains she takes three regular meals a day.

"For breakfast, I have juice and two slices of bread. During lunch and dinner, I have more carbo and at night, I make sure I get enough sleep. I do follow a diet regime but in moderation. It doesn't mean I don't treat myself to an occasional snack, though," she adds.

"For my face, I just do regular facials. I don't go for any other beauty treatments."

Despite her friendly demeanor, Lim knows that she has some detractors as a result of winning the pageant, but chooses to ignore them.

"I don't care what they say about me," she declares. "I'd rather listen to the advice of those closest to me, like my family and friends. I believe that I earned this title, and I will do my best in Hong Kong to make Malaysia proud."

Miss Chinese International Pageant 2007 will be broadcast 'live' from Hong Kong on Astro Wah Lai Toi (Channel 30) on Jan 20, 2007.

  • MHK WINNER AT NEWS TEAM PARTY EVENT *Translated & courtesy of Em, TVBSpace.Net
The 39th Anniversary Party for the stations reporters and newscasters was held earlier and this year's Miss Hong Kong winners Aimee Chan, Janet Chow and Koni Lui were present at the seven-table banquet to draw the tickets for the grand prize draw. However, Koni felt unwell half way through the event and was absent from the press conference afterwards.

Aimee and Janet have done other work before winning their titles, so they have been to similar types of events with colleagues. Janet is a regular winner in these lucky draws and once won a golden pig. However, she says she is not particularly lucky and some of her friends are even luckier than her. Aimee says her luck is not too bad and when she went to the amusement parks, she would always win the toy that she wanted, making everyone else jealous.

Aimee is currently preparing hard for the Miss Chinese International contest in January, but she seemed a little spotty at this event. Asked if she was feeling the pressure, she says she will not give herself any pressure because this will just affect her performance. Her spots have arisen because she has been eating too many biscuits lately. She says: "I usually eat quite plainly and I like eating salads with low salt and low fat, but these biscuits are too tasty and I could not resist, so it has given me a breakout of spots." With the pageant looming, she says she will be watching her diet to avoid affecting her skin.

  • AIMEE CHAN ONCE CRASHED INTO A TREE *Translated & courtesy of Em, TVBSpace.Net
Miss Hong Kong winner Aimee Chan has an escort to drive her around at the moment, but she says she is busy learning the routes, so after her reign, she can buy a car to get around in. "After all, when I was in Canada, I was used to having a car to get around in and this is more convenient." She says that she is a very safe driver: "I don't like driving fast, so I drive quite slowly and my friends all say I am very safe. The only accident I had was when the roads were very icy after some snow and I crashed into a tree after slipping, but I have never injured anyone."

THE VILLAGE PEOPLE MEETS HONG KONG BEAUTIES *Translated & courtesy of Em, TVBSpace.Net
Leanne Li modelled for a website photoshoot earlier to be their 'November Beauty' and in order to look her best, she did a double mask on the night before, but this had a negative effect on her skin and she ended up with two spots on her face instead. She smiles: "I was being greedy and thought that if I used two masks, the results would be even better, but the over-moisturising left me like this."

Leanne reveals that her fee for this shoot is a six-figure sum and she is very pleased. She likes to go shopping online, but she will not make friends online. She says: "I will not chat with strangers on the internet because meeting people like this is quite dangerous. Usually I only talk to friend and family on MSN."

  • FALA CHEN NEWS *Translated & courtesy of Em, TVBSpace.Net
Fala Chen's work has been endless since her transition from Beauty Queen to Artiste, but her rumours and gossip have also risen as well, but for the optimistic Fala, she sees this as part of her work in showbiz and she says once again that she has no-one in pursuit at the moment.

Since she entered the industry, Fala has filmed for five series one after another and her Cantonese has improved a lot since she first arrived in Hong Kong. She says that there was some difficulty in learning Cantonese but fortunately she has had plenty of opportunity to perform and this has also provided her with many chances to learn and improve. With the increase in her exposure, the gossip has also been part of the package and Fala says seriously: "I understand that to be interviewed is all part of the job, but I am not being courted at the moment and those who know me will know I am quite a tomboy." She says that the gossip has not afffected her daily life and she has never imagined that she would be followed by so many reporters, but she is used to this now.

As Fala has signed for a number of years with TVB, she is currently focusing on her work and she will be putting romance aside for now. She will soon begin filming for a show about dancing opposite Matthew Ko, so she is working hard on her Latin Dance lessons because this is a new challenge for her. It turns out that Fala's mother is a dance teacher and has her own dancing school, but Fala has never been much of a dancer and has not inherited the talent. She says: "I was quite naughty as a child, so I would jump around a lot when I was learning. My mother rarely taught me formally anyway, so this time I have to learn how to do it properly to avoid making a fool of myself in front of everyone."

As well as her interests in performing in the limelight, Fala studied Marketing in America, so she plans to return to the business world in the future and even become an environmental warrior. She says: "American Society progresses very quickly and the air quality there is very poor. A lot of the problems in some areas can be solved and as an artiste, it is difficult to promote this message on my own."

  • FIONA YUEN & MHK WINNERS AT AWARD CEREMONY *Translated & courtesy of Em, TVBSpace.Net
Fiona Yuen joined the three winners of this year's Miss Hong Kong Pageant Aimee Chan, Janet Chow and Koni Lui at a beauty products awards ceremony held by a magazine. Asked if she likes premium brands, Fiona says that it is not a necessity and she will lend her support to many new labels. Has she ever been caught out when she tries a new product? She says that she has never had any problems with skin sensitivity, but her brother has a lot of allergies. Fiona has been filming a series of Christmas ads for a cake shop recently and talking of Christmas, she says that her family have come to Hong Kong from Germany to visit her, so she will be spending the festival with her family. Did she spend last Christmas with her boyfriend? She says she does not want to talk about this as she has not found anyone yet this year and she is in no rush to start dating. She smiles that her friends have been introducing her to men, but she feels that as there are not enough 'premium brands' available, she is prepared to give the others a try, but it has to be one she can get along with.

Aimee prefers design to the label and the most important thing is to look good. Koni smiles that she if sees something that she likes, then she will buy it within ten minutes. Aimee smiles that if she knows what she wants, then she will just buy it because she is too busy all the time. She also smiles that she likes mixing things, when the press asked her if she likes 'mixing' with men, she smiles that this is not what she means and clarifies that she was referring to her clothes. So does she like mixed race men? She says that she has to have a feeling for the man and she likes men who are talented.

NOVEMBER 22ND

  • THE VILLAGE PEOPLE MEETS HONG KONG BEAUTIES *Translated & courtesy of Em, TVBSpace.Net
1970's pop group The Village People will be joining up with Gloria Gaynor to hold a concert in Hong Kong and a press conference for the event was held yesterday, attended by Miss Hong Kong winners Aimee Chan and Koni Lui. Other celebrity fans including Vincy, Sonija Kwok and Angela Tong were also on hand to lend their support.

Sonija was asked about the recent reports suggesting that former rumoured boyfriend Joe Ma has been sighted with a female companion whilst on his earlier trip to Thailand. In response to this, she said: "This is his private affair and I don't know anything about it, so I am not in a position to say anything. The only thing this proves is that I am not his girlfriend, so please don't ask me any more questions about him. I am so happy to be freed from this!" As for the reports of Joe's wife returning to Hong Kong to sort things out with him, Sonija just says: "Never mind that she is a woman, even it if was a man, it would be very difficult to ignore these reports." TVB Executive Virginia Lok indicated that an artiste's image is very important and she will be urging Joe to clean up his act.

At the event, when the Village People saw Aimee and Koni, they asked who they were before commenting that Hong Kong girls were very pretty. When they found out that they were beauty queens they were even more complimentary and band member 'Biker' Eric Anzalone seemed especially attracted to Koni in her evening dress and put his arm around her waist as well as brushing the back of her hand as he was deep in conversation. Koni said in response to this: "Chinese people are more reserved, holding onto someone's waist is normal Western etiquette and I can accept this. (How about stroking your hand?) He had rings on all five fingers and when I shook hands with him, he knocked his hand into mine. He was just rubbing it better and saying sorry."

Vincy presented the group with a copy of her debut album as a souvenir and talking of the criticisms of the poor English grammar in Joey Yung's song "My Pride", Vincysupported her senior, saying: "Singing is about feelings and to express this is more important. I feel that Joey has done very well."

  • AIMEE CHAN MISSES HER DOGS *Translated & courtesy of Em, TVBSpace.Net
This year's Miss Hong Kong winners Aimee Chan, Janet Chow and Koni Lui are all dog-lovers and they took part in an animal charity event yesterday. Self-confessed dog fanatic Aimee hopes to set up her own charity to look after strag dogs. She also reveals that she has three dogs back home in Canada: "One is old and blind and I miss him very much. I often call home and talk to them and I once even flew all the way back to Canada just to see them. I hope that I can bring them all to Hong Kong."

Koni says that her brother who lives in Egypt has a dog and a cat, because cats are a sacred animal over there, so they are more popular than dogs.
