After winning Miss Hong Kong and being promoted by TVB earlier, Mandy Cho upset the executives at the beginning of the year, leaving her dumped in favour of up and coming star Linda Chung. Rumours suggest that as TVB had half given up with her progress, she was allowed to take 9 months off to study Gemology in America.

Reports indicate that Mandy's contract with TVB does not end until 2009, so she is faced with a rather unsure future ahead of her. She arrived back in Hong Kong on Wednesday evening with five cases of luggage and was quickly met by her parents. Some male fans gathered around her asking for her autograph and to take a photo with them. Asked if she has finished her studies, she says: "I have been in America for nine months now, studying Gemstone Identification. I have not had any new work yet, but I will be discussing this with TVB shortly." After saying this, Mandy quickly left with her parents in her father's work car.

Miss Hong Kong winners Aimee Chan and Koni Lui joined Mr Hong Kong winners Francois Huynh and Otto Chan and four members of the Hong Kong Squash Team to take part in the inauguration ceremony for TVB Pearl's "Hong Kong Squash Open" competition. The girls then had a match against the men and they seemed to know what they were doing, but it was later revealed that they did not know how to play at all!

Aimee's favourite sports are ice hockey and figure skating, where she as able to do many of leaps and spins in the past, but she cannot do them any more. She says: "In the past, I would spend three hours a week practising. Doing more sports is good for your body as well as building your stamina." As for Koni, she will be heading out to Japan and Beijing to take part in the Miss International Pageant next month, so she is busy learning how to do her own make up and hair as well as selecting suitable souvenirs to take with her for the other contestants. Asked if she is confident, Koni says: "I am tall enough, but my figure is not as good as the caucasians."

The Wai Yin Society held a charity fundraising event yesterday attended by Miss Hong Kong winner Aimee Chan, second runner up Koni Lui and Tourism Ambassador Suki Chui, who joined the parade of vintage cars in a world record attempt over the Tsing Ma bridge. Aimee indicated that this event will involve 150 vintage BMW's and this is the first time she has seen such a prestigious event. The three girls joined the journey with the cars and indicated that they do like this make of car. Suki indicated that the seats were very comfortable and Aimee expressed a liking for the convertible models because they allow you to enjoy the fresh air.

The three girls were asked what their dream cars were and Aimee and Koni both said they didn't have one, but they do have licences. Suki likes the Mini Cooper, but she does not have a driving licence as she has just done the written test. Aimee joined the development council on a trip to Hungary recently and she got to know Miss Hungary 2002, who was her host and showed her around the sights as well as some furniture design showrooms and some designer boutiques, but unfortunately she did not have time to do any shopping. Asked if she met any handsome men on her trip, she says that Hungarian men are handsome and very gracious. Would she accept a foreigner as a boyfriend? She says there is no problem as long as they are in love, then even distance is not an issue.

Former Miss Hong Kong winners Anne Heung and Virginia Yung took part in an "Evergreen Modelling" event, where they joined over a hundred pensioners to share tips on how to build confidence, attractiveness and beauty.

Anne's good friend Yoyo Mung has been linked with Ekin Cheng recently and when she was asked about this, Anne was very secretive as she told the press to ask Yoyo. As for Yoyo becoming the target of the paparazzi of late, she has warned Yoyo to drive carefully. Talking of Yoyo smiling sweetly whenever the romance is mentioned, Anne says that Yoyo is always very happy. At the event, Anne shared her experiences of doing shows and taking part in Miss Hong Kong with the elderly participants and although she has been in the industry for many years now, she is still nervous when she goes on stage. Talking of how she gets on with the older generation, she says that she does not spend much time with them because her own grandparents are abroad, however, she does not worry about not being able to communicate because many pensioners are very trendy and old many life experiences, so she has a lot to learn from them.

Anne Heung and Virginia Yung have a close affinity because they were schoolfriends for both high school and university and it was Virginia who crowned Anne. She feels that she is able to get on with the elderly and feels the most important thing is patience, so she does not have any problems getting on with her mother-in-law. Asked what she thinks of this year's Miss Hong Kong winner Aimee Chan, she says she has not seen Aimee in person, but feels she is quite pretty. As for the rumours about her breast enhancement, she feels that if it is acceptable for the person, then that is okay.

Miss Hong Kong winner Aimee Chan joined models Vanessa Yeung and Ana R in a press conference for the "Hong Kong Style Expo - Budepest" and they will soon be flying out to Budapest to promote Hong Kong products.

Aimee is very excited at the prospect of visiting Budapest, because she has never been to Eastern Europe. Asked how she will prepare, Aimee says that the temperature there is only between 10 and 20 degrees, so she will be taking a shawl and some vitamin pills. As Budapest is a very romantic place, will she choose this as a possible honeymoon location? She laughs that she will decide after she has seen the place but she admits that she prefers France. Since winning the contest, Aimee has had many jobs connected with her title's mission and asked if she was finding it hard work, she says that she likes being busy and if she has free time she would feel uncomfortable. She would much prefer to have work every day because this means she is not wasting time.

Vanessa and Ana both indicated that when they were 16, they shot an ad in Budapest and it was very pretty there. Asked if there were any handsome men there, Ana laughed that she is not interested in Western men because they are too big and tall and she has a preference for Oriental men. She says that after this event, she will be heading over to Japan to watch Madonna in concert with her boyfriend Mr Chow. As for Vanessa taking second place in the "Beautiful Cooking" (Beautiful Cooking is HILARIOUS. Visit youtube.com & type 'beautiful cooking' in search & watch till u burst!) finals aired this week, she says that she had to prepare hard for the contest beforehand as she cooked for her boyfriend and her family to try a couple of days before. Asked if her boyfriend made this an opportunity for her to meet his parents, she smiles that they were just getting to know each other and it was just a couple of extra places as her parents are very open minded.

  • ST. JOHN'S YOUTH TO APPEAR IN PROVINCE-WIDE BOOTLEGGER CAMPAIGN
ST JOHN’S – Ashley Bursey, a 20-year-old native of St. John’s, was chosen recently to appear in Bootlegger’s Generation B fall campaign.

The campaign, which features 53 youth from across Canada, will begin Sept 1 with the launch of the Generation B photos in St. John’s and Corner Brook stores. Bursey, who was flown to Vancouver for the shoot, will appear in the Corner Brook, Avalon, and Village malls.

The models will also be featured online, at www.bootlegger.com, where locals can vote for their favorite Generation B representative. The winner will receive $10 000 after the month of voting, which also begins Sept 1.

Bursey, an active community member who organized an elementary school theatre group in high school, has a plan if she wins the prize. She wants to donate a portion of the money to fund drama programs in elementary schools around the province, as well as initiate a drama festival for youth under 13.

"Drama was an important part of my life, and helped me express myself in ways I never could have imagined,” she explains. “I want to share that gift with as many people as I can."

Ashley traveled to Vancouver right after competing in the Miss World Canada pageant in Toronto, where she placed first-runner-up.
