Choi, 21,
is now a student at the University of Guelph studying biomedical toxicology.
At university, she became involved in dance and modelling shows and
was encouraged by a friend to try out for the Miss World Canada pageant.
When the co-ordinators at the Miss World Canada pageant
called her to tell her she was their pick to represent North York in
the 2006 competition in July, she was ecstatic and surprised.
Choi did
not have any previous pageant experience and said: "I don't think
I was bred to be in a beauty pageant, but I guess that's the beauty
of it."
Jimmy Steele,
vice-president and contestant co-ordinator for Miss World Canada met
with all the applicants before the final selection and said Choi stood
out from the others.
"We were looking for people with the total package,
not just physical beauty. She had to be articulate, intelligent and
talented and Daphne embodied
all those qualities. She's a very talented singer, too," he added.
He remembered hearing Choi
sing outside the audition room right before meeting the judges. "I
just heard a huge round of applause afterwards," he said.
Along with vocal talents, Choi
is an experienced dance choreographer and has volunteered her time in
co-ordinating numerous dance shows in the community and at school.
Lyndon Lee
is a fellow dancer who has danced with Choi
in shows around the city and in Guelph over the past two years.
"Daphne loves music and dance and is very driven
and stands up for what she believes in," he said.
Aside from volunteering her artistic talents, Choi
said she is also passionate about charity work and has volunteered at
The Yellow Brick House, a shelter for battered woman, and is an active
member of the Canadian Chinese Youth Athletic Association.
After doing some research on the pageant, Choi
said she was more excited about being part of the event after learning
about the numerous charities Miss World Canada supports, something she
said few people understand.
"The general public doesn't know about pageants
and what these women do," she said.
Even her parents are sceptical about the purpose of beauty
pageants and her involvement in one.
"My mom only sees women clad in swimsuits and a
lot of people think all pageants are scams."
For now, Choi
is in contact with the offices of Ward 23 Councillor John Filion (Willowdale),
who has asked her to help distribute North York logo pens and T-shirts.
She is also trying to spread the word about the Miss World Canada to
help raise donations for The Rock Solid Foundation, a charity the pageant
supports to help curb youth violence.
"If I win, I would try to help establish a community
centre for women, children and immigrants," she said. "I want
to show people I'm more than just a woman on a pedestal."
