PETALING JAYA: Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant winner, KTAR student Annabelle Kong Pooi Yee, stood out among the rest of the contestants for a few reasons ˇp8V her answer during the question and answer segment, her height and her talent routine.

The 20-year-old advanced diploma in technology building student from Ipoh was the only one out of five finalists who answered that she chose knowledge over experience when asked which would give one a good judgment in making a decision.

"You can gain knowledge and learn about many topics just by reading books. It saves you time from learning things from experience, although learning from experience including those of others is also useful,"was how the beauty queen replied when interviewed during the segment on Friday night.

She was surprised she had won the title despite her height ˇp8V she is 162cm tall.

"I know I am not very tall. So I was really surprised. I guess it was my confidence, my answer and being natural that gave me the extra points,"she said.

Kong, who also won the Photogenic Award subsidiary title, has been dancing since she was little and she did a hip-hop dance routine during the pageant held at the Pyramid Convention Centre on Friday night.

Kong, who said she was dumbfounded by her win, had a simple routine to prepare her for the contest.

"I drank lots of water, had enough sleep and stayed happy,"she said.

Does she dream of becoming a TV star, model or famous entertainer like her predecessors?

"My ambition is to become a quantity surveyor,"she said simply.

The contest was the eighth annual gala beauty pageant organised and produced by Astro Wah Lai Toi (Channel 30), telecast live over the channel.

Kong also won RM30,000, a Nissan Cefiro worth RM156,511 and other prizes. She will also represent Malaysia at the Miss Chinese International Pageant 2006 to be held in Hong Kong in January.

First runner-up was Emily Lim Pey Chi, 23, an undergraduate taking a Bachelor of Science course from Malacca, who won RM15,000 and other prizes.

She also won the Elegance Award and Body Beautiful subsidiary titles.

Third place went to administrator Yen Lim Yen Keun, 25, from Kuala Lumpur who received RM10,000 and other prizes.

  • BEAUTY, BRAINS TO RULE WORLD
    By KEVIN CONNOR, TORONTO SUN
    Friday, October 21, 2005

Canada's representative for Miss World 2005 isn't your sterotypical beauty pageant contestant.

Ramona Amiri, a 24-year-old Persian beauty, graduated with honours biology from the University of British Columbia, speaks five languages, volunteers extensively, and has a passion for riding motorcycles.

The goal in Miss World is to find intelligent women who can raise money for charities, Amiri, a Vancouver native, said yesterday in Toronto, where she's preparing for the Dec. 10 pageant in China.

    'WANT TO BE LIKE MOM'

"The theme of the pageant is "Beauty with a Purpose," and this year Canada is raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society," Amiri said.

It's a charity that hits close to home for Amiri.

"My mother is a family physician and I want to be like my mom. I worked with her for four years and some patients had cancer so this is very close to me," said Amiri, who has applied to UBC's medical school for next year.

"I had never been interested in pageants before, but I was attracted to how much charitable work Miss World does. I'm passionate about helping people and it would be an honour to raise money for cancer research," she said.

Because Amiri speaks English, French, Assyrian, Farsi and Spanish she will be able to communicate with many of the competitors and act as a translator for others.

"She's got the brains, the body and the beauty to win," said Jimmy Steele, of the Miss World Canada organization.

NO SAN FRANCISCO REP. AT MCI 2006 *Information courtesy of Annie & Carol
Carol Chen will not be competing at MCI 2006 in January 2006 due to conflicting schedules with University studies & other reasons (keep reading). Her court (1st RU) Charlene and (Miss SF) Flora didn't want to participate due to lack of interest and studies.

S.F. Chinese Chamber only allows top three to go IF they represented the Bay Area when competing in Miss Chinatown USA. That's how it has been before and will seem to stay that way from the response of S.F. Chamber this year.

If the TOP 2 winners aren't from SF Bay, they are unable to represent SF during MCI. Choice of MCI automatically goes to top Bay Area Winner.
