  • SHORT REVIEW
    Introductions
    - loved the short opening clip of the contestants in ancient Chinese costumes (was this the only thing filmed at FuoShan?)
    - The stage looked small in the beginning ...but as the night progressed...very nice though nothing spectacular like MHK

    - the border/outline decorating the stage was reminiscent to Thai theme from Miss Universe 2005

    Clones?
#7 Johannesburg - Monica Lo & Zhang Ziyi
    #14 Melbourne - Myolie Wu

Talent: loved this segment tremendously & especially enjoyed performances by...
#1 Vancouver - opened strongly though mostly upper body movements
    * #3 New York - clearly the best dancer & she did the splits as if it's effortless
#4 Chicago - interesting & she made it good
#5 Seattle - lovely & original though a bit short
#10 Taipei - not the best piano player but impressive due to time constraints (it was memorized & had minimal mistakes)
#12 Toronto- still wondering where 2 plates came from. didn't see her holding them in the beginning!
    * #14 Melbourne - another AMAZING dancer. a female aaron kwok! :)
    * #15 Tahiti - no one can move hips like her
    (* Indicate my favourites)

    Swimsuit
    - stage at this point reminds me of MCI 93
    - came out with confidence: *#1 Vancouver, *#3 NY, #7 Johannesburg, #8 Singapore, #9 Kuala Lumpur, #12 Toronto (improved lots since MCT), #13 Peru, #15 Tahiti, #16 Manila, * 17 HK (* Indicate my favourites)
Interviews: many answered in Mandarin & I wasn't able to understand all of it so N/C

TVB..a cry for help & desperate for new talent?
    - hiring acrobats for the number before the coronation...where are the TVB performers/dancers?

    Qi Pao
    - more traditional versus last yr & went well with the overall theme. Aesthetically, I prefer last yr's over these.
#5 Seattle had the best color (subtle)..maybe #3 NY too, #2 Sydney, #12 Toronto, #16 Manila & a few others had looser qipaos, #5 Seattle, 7 Johannesburg, #17 HK were the standouts

Singing with the old dude "Brother Tin"
    - all contestants sang a short verse live & most ran out of steam. I think #14 Melbourne was the best singer but it's hard to tell...

    No you didin't!!
    - Eric Tsang says "thank you to the 16 contestants....no 17 contestants!" after singing with "Brother Tin"

    Top 5 Fortune Teller
    - Time waster & she wasn't even accurate ;) I'd rather they ask the contestants who they thought would place in top 3.

    Crowning
    - for the first time since MCI 00 the entire court from the previous yr came back to crown the winners. Even
Miss Friendship 2005 Jolene Chin (Kuala Lumpur) came back!

    Overall
-Great show! Talent segment was the highlight..they should keep this for next yr as well!

  • MISS CHINESE INTERNATIONAL RESULTS*Translated from The Sun
    Winner: #7 Ina Liu (Johannesburg)
1st RU: #6 Ginney Hui (Bangkok)
2nd RU: #9 Annabelle Kong (Kuala Lumpur)
Finalists: #1 Crystal Li (Vancouver), #12 Elva Ni (Toronto)

    Awards:
Ceramic Culture Ambassador: #17 Tracy Ip (HK)
Miss Friendship: #9 Annabelle Kong (Kuala Lumpur)
Miss Young: #6 Ginney Hui (Bangkok)

Last night, 16 contestants from around the world competed in the MCI finals. Winner was hot favourite #7 Ina Liu (Johannesburg), 1st RU #6 Ginney Hui (Bangkok) & Miss Young, 2nd RU #9 Annabelle Kong (Kuala Lumpur) & Miss Friendship.

Winner Ina Liu is 24 years of age & was originally from Taiwan. She's currently a University student & aspires to be a successful person. Most of the contestants danced for their talent, while Ina's talent was original as she'd signed w/ her hands & lipsynched to a song. "I'm surprised it was me. I never dreamt of winning & I was just trying to be myself." Do you think its unfortunate Hong Kong didn't make the top 5? "I respect the judge's decision & I might stay in HK with my Mom & give the entertainment world a shot." 1st RU Ginney Hui couldn't believe her win either & says she'll try her best.

2nd RU Annabelle was considered a cold door but gave the judges a run for their money during the Q&A segment. "When I see the three of you, I'm also full!" (You'll have to watch the finals to understand). Annabelle also 'inched' MC Eric Tsang Chi-Wai as he had no jawline (watch the show it was hilarious!). Annabelle says "Maybe it's because I was outspoken & so my performance was a bit different."

Hong Kong's Tracy Ip unfortunately didn't make the finalists cut but expressed the top 3 were her choices & that she'd tried her best. Carol Cheng Yue-Ling said "What did Tracy lose out on? Nothing! She was exceptional, but the other contestants were even better."

The 16 contestants appeared in swimwear for the local press. The swimsuits were red or pink (dangerously cut high) & paired w/ a pair of black strappy sandals. According to The Sun, #7 Ina (Johannesburg) walked off the stage before the press had finished taking her pictures. She later explained she has few opportunity to wear a swimsuit & wasn't used to wearing it in public. When asked if she had confidence, she said "I'll be myself & will try my best".

Voted by the contestants, #9 Annabelle (Kuala Lumpur) was announced as Miss Friendship. Annabelle revealed she'd voted for her good friend & roommate #7 Ina (Johannesburg) & her win might be due to her carefree personality. When asked about her confidence, Annabelle says "I definitely have confidence, but it's all up to the final performance." The press also asked if #17 Tracy (HK) was disappointed she did not win the friendship award, but Tracy says she wasn't & she'd also voted for #9 Annabelle.

Standout in swimsuit: #7 Ina (Johannesburg) but all contestants looked very fit.

Predictions: Hard to say..but expect #12 Toronto, #17 HK, #7 Johannesburg, & possibly #1 Crystal & 6 Bangkok to do well...it could be anyone's game because there isn't anyone w/ the 'perfect TVB pkg'. At the end of the day, TVB wants an actress who's beautiful/popular, preferably Cantonese speaking, & based on past results someone tall (5'7" & up), relatively young (approx. 20 yrs), has a proportional figure, Univ. educated, & interested in acting.

#17 Tracy (HK) fits the description almost perfectly. However, she's already signed up with TVB & they will likely promote a new star. Her runway skills are superb & like many of this yr's contestants, is well rounded though not necessarily 'TVB approved'.
#1 Crystal (Vancouver) is excellent on stage & extremely aware of her presence. A possible finalist.
#2 Fiona (Sydney) is sweet & elegant. Lots of potential
#3 Nicole (New York) also performs well on stage. Imho, one of the strongest talents (belly dancing- that's if TVB let's her perform it)
#4 Lillian (Chicago) has a fun personality & one of the most interesting talent (chinese ballet!)
#5 Amy (Seattle) has the best smile of the competition (looks amazing w/ silver tone makeup) & one of the most exciting talents (ribbon dance).
#6 Ginney (Bangkok) might not be able to converse in Chinese but definitely stands out in a crowd & is quite elegant.
#7 Ina (Johannesburg) has the winner's look (doesn't hurt to resemble past queens such as MCI 97 Monica Lo & MHK 2002 Tiffany Lam & actress Zhang Ziyi) & best figure of the competition.
#8 Sherry (Singapore) is intelligent & articulate. She might be too accomplished for TVB & that's not a bad thing!
#9 Annabelle (Kuala Lumpur) has one of the sweetest faces & will impress all w/ her talent. Looks gorgeous with minimal makeup. Kuala Lumpur has done quite well. Since 1998, all winners have placed in the top 3, 5 or won special awards.
#10 Sasha (Taipei) fits the bill but is considered a dark horse. She is interested in the entertainment industry.
#11 Vicki (Montreal)....would've placed in the top 5 & kicked butt in talent
#12 Elva (Toronto) a heavy favourite for the Miss Young award. She's like a tall & humble Diana Wu (MCT 02, MCI 03 2nd RU). If Toronto isn't in the top 3, Vancouver will be there
#13 Melody (Lima) has a healthy figure but doesn't speak Chinese
#14 Elizabeth (Melbourne) looking better now than at MCM. She's beautiful with minimal makeup
#15 Yvette (Tahiti) has something special in her...must be her smile! One of the best Tahiti reps in a long time.
#16 Royce (Manila) has one of the most beautiful & photogenic faces of the competition.

The 16 MCI contestants met the judges for a private interview today & organizers had a draw & selected #10 Sasha (Taipei) to try on the crown & hold the 200 K sceptor. Current hot doors are #6 Ginney (Bangkok), #12 Elva (Toronto), & #17 Tracy (Hong Kong). (#7 Ina (Johannesburg) is The Sun's hot door)

Judges for this Saturday's finals are Carol Cheng Yue-Ling, Cheung Yuk-San, Ma Fung-Gwok, Mok Wah-Lun, Wong Jung-Yung. Cheung Ngaai-Ga was also named as a judge. However she became ill recently & Carol Cheng has since replaced her. Master of ceremonies are Eric Tsang Chi-Wai, Derek Lee Ho-Lam, & Sam Mei. One of the guest performers is Kenny.

#10 Sasha (Taipei) was chosen to try on the MCI crown & carry the 200K gold sceptor. When asked about how it feels to wear the prizes & about her confidence level, she replied "It's nothing special. I do have confidence & I will try my best come final night. But I haven't thought of winning." Who do you think is a threat? "Everyone's performance has been excellent so far, so it's hard to say."

According to the HK press, #17 Tracy (HK) was rumored to be ostracized by the other contestants. She says "There are too many rumours...but in reality, we're all very close & the staff can prove it."

Guest performer Kenny says "Previously, I haven't paid much attention to the MCI competition, but I'm quite nervous because I have to present the contestants." When asked who his favourite is, Kenny revealed there's something special about #15 Yvette (Tahiti) especially when she's doing her grass dance, as she has "star quality".

TVB released the measurements of contestants #1-8 for the press. According to the HK press (namely The Sun & Oriental Daily), #1 Crystal (Vancouver) & 3 Nicole (New York) 'stand out'. Though #1 Crystal has the best measurements of the first group, she's considered a cold door. #6 Ginney (Bangkok) also has a good body & looks sweet. #7 Ina (Johannbesug) has been appointed the hot door now that Montreal's gone.

  • OFFICIAL PICTURES FINALLY OUT
The photos were published early friday morning & all the delegates looked beautiful in them. From the first set, I thought...

#1 Crysta (Vancouver) - looks slightly like Linda Chung (MCI 04)
#2 Fiona (Sydney) - slightly like Fala Chen (MCI 05 1st RU) at certain angles.
#7 Ina (Johannesburg) - a bit like Monica Lo (MCI 97) & actress Zhang Zi-Yi. Sometimes a bit like Tiffany Lam (MHK 2002)
#16 Royce (Manila) - like a young Loletta Chu

Second set of photos (w/ the costumes). Seemed like it was completed in a rush & few looked ready.
#3 Nicole (NY) had a amazing shot (best pic I've seen of her). As did #16 Royce (Manila) & #17 Tracy (HK).

With Miss Montreal's sudden withdrawal, there are now 16 contestants competing at the finals. Yesterday, the delegates went to HK's Ocean Park for more promotional activities.

    Fun on the rides
Most of the contestants went on the rides at Ocean Park. Among them #3 New York's Nicole Wang went on the 'drop zone' & held onto the nearest delegate to her as she was petrified! After the ride she was seen wiping a few tears due to the intensity. Nicole says, "I wasn't planning on going on the rides, but the others urged me to go as it was fun. This will be the first & last time I'll be going on a ride as I was so afraid!"

Another favourite #7 Ina (Johannesburg) opted to sit out all the thriller rides. When asked whether she felt she's lost a competitor due to Montreal's withdrawal, Ina said, "No, we were all very sad to see her go".

Aside from going on the roller coasters, the contestants also watched dolphins & sea lions. #1 Crystal (Vancouver) & #9 Annabelle (Kuala Lumpur) were chosen to kiss the sea lions.

As for Montreal's withdrawl, organizer Chan Ji-Lin said "This is the first contestant to withdraw from MCI, though it's very unfortunate, but we must respect her parents' decision.". There are many rumours surrounding Montreal's withdrawal, check out this thread from the MHKB forum regarding TVB contracts & being careful with any documents you may sign in any given sitaution.

Organizers of the MCI 2006 pageant have arranged non-stop promotional activities these last couple days, in hopes the public will become more familiar w/ this year's contestants. One of the hot doors this yr is #11 Vicki Ng-Wan, who has quietly withdrew from the competition & is on her way back home to Montreal!

    Needed parental consent form
One of the rules for MCI is those who are under the age of 18 will require the signatures of the parents or guardian in order to participate in the pageant. Vicki is only 17 years of age & needed to have the consensus hardcopy submitted before the Jan 11th. According to the press her parents have already signed the papers but TVB hasn't received them yet. As a result, Vicki decided to 'voluntarily' withdraw from the competition. Will the organizers include one more contestant in the pageant? Highly unlikely. Due to time constraints & promotional activities which are nearly complete, it wouldnt be fair to have a new delegate. Not to mention the outdoor filming have been completed. If they were to have an additional delegate at this stage, what would her outdoor shot be like?...Organizers said this incident was very unfortunate but they have decided to stick w/ the 16 contestants to compete on Jan 21st. The other delegates are saddened by Vicki's departure & held a small going-away gathering for her.

    So many questions ...
Why weren't the forms handed in earlier? Most information were sent to TVB prior to Dec 10th & the contestants later had to present them to the organizers upon their arrivals (Jan1). Did Vicki accidentally leave them home? But why can't TVB accept the forms through fax & email or even through verbal confirmation until the hardcopy arrives? Her parents have given consent to her participation seeing how she was allowed to compete at Miss Chinese Montreal. TVB as usual are tough & played it extra safe just in case. Or is there more to her departure that we don't know? Here's something to ponder about.

According to the rules & regulations of MCI Rule # Q
"Any mis-conduct, non-observance of rules and disrespect by a Delegate may result in immediate dismissal from the MISS CHINESE INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT 2006, as determined by Pageant Officials. In addition, all Delegates are governed by the rules set forth in the Official Entry Form of the MISS CHINESE INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT 2006, which you have signed before coming to the Pageant."

Maybe she was politely asked to leave for undisclosed reasons? According to Singpao, she left HK with her parents...

With Montreal out of the picture, the door is once again wide open. But who will be the next hot door?

The contestants attended the Jit Gong travel & tourism convention yesterday, where the organizers appointed the girls as goodwill ambassadors. Before the event, the contestants had a draw & #17 Hong Kong's Tracy Ip was selected to accept a special travel & tourism sash from the organizers. When asked whether she's afraid the other girl's might be a bit jealous Tracy said "No, we're all really good friends. Last night we all went shopping...mostly for cosmetics & beauty products. I even asked my father to buy a few phone cards in case anyone's lost, as some of the other girls aren't familiar w/ HK. Tomorrow, I'll go shopping with some of the girls & have a facial done, or we might go to Disneyland instead!"

Although Tracy was chosen to accept the special sash from the organizers, they mistakenly gave the sash to #9 Annabelle Kong of Kuala Lumpur. Tracy revealed "I don't have much luck being a designated representative. It didn't happen for me at Miss HK either... must be fate." Do you think you'll have no fate with MCI awards? "Competing in this pageant will depend on my ability, & not by luck. I have confidence in myself!"

Last night, the 17 MCI 2006 contestants went to Victoria Harbour to view the city's beautiful nightscene & laser lights event. Spirits were high as the contestants chatted away happily while capturing photos of their memory. #17 HK's Tracy Ip said "This is incredible! The television usually shows the city's many lights but this is the first time I've really witnessed it myself."

Hot door #11 Montreal Vicki Ng-Wan said "Montreal is also captivating at night, but HK has a lot of high rise buildings." She smiled & spoke about Christy Chung (MCI 93) & Angela Tong Ying-Ying (MCI 95 participant) who once represented Montreal at MCI & are now successful actresses. However, Vicki reveals her fate may not be the same as theirs. Vicki doesn't know she's currently the heavy favourite at MCI 2006. But if theres a chance, she just might establish herself in HK.

#17 HK Tracy Ip also revealed #4 Miss Chicago Lillian Chan is her roomate & the girls have gotten along splendidly, often chatting late into the night. The 2 have a lot in common....especially their love for animals. Miss Chicago is currently studying to become a vet & Tracy once worked at an animal
