Rana's Final Review

Miss Best Complexion: #7 Cynthia deserved this award. She had a natural glow and it showed in close ups photographs

Miss Best Posture: Juding by the pictures, it was obvious who knew how to present themselves in a proper fashion. #4,6,7 displayed this throughout other pictures as well, & their sitting poses was very evident. While sitting, a lady should never cross her legs in a dress, but should tuck one leg behind the other. Your presentation must also be confident and elegant. Most importantly, it must appear natural.

Miss Photogenic: This award could have gone either way between #2,3,4,7 and perhaps 8. But I'm glad #2 Annie would this award, as it secured her win, since the recipient for this award has always become the winner. This has been the case (to my knowledge) from '95-97, '99-present.

Miss Popularity: This was an award which could have gone to anyone who wanted it bad enough. The set up wasn't that great and it was obvious the results weren't checked with IP addresses along with the phone numbers. Fortunately, #8 Kassie won.

Miss Talent: #5 Sarah won this award, but the horrible camera angles did not allow us to see how high she was thrown/jumped. I felt the men who assisted her deserved half her award too. It was like pairs skating but only awarding it to the female skater. #1 Olivia had an impressive latin dance. She was definitely robbed of the Miss Talent award imho. #2 Annie had a unique talent (chinese piano), and hopefully she will use this to her advantage at MCI. Overall, I felt there was too much dancing...

#1 Olivia- Had there been a perfect figure award, Olivia would have won it. She had the best talent and it was amazing on screen. Unfortunately, she did not have the winner's look.

#2 Annie- Was the obvious winner from the start. She appeared very calm in most of the segments and carried herself very well especially in the gown and kay pao segments. She looked amazing in her evening gown and figure was much sharper in contrast to #1 Olivia. The dress did her wonders! Her 'chinese piano' was also very impressive and obviously worked very hard as it took her about 2 months to learn it. Annie definitely deserved her place! If FTV can boost her confidence, improve her warobe (nothing tacky & too eye catching please) Annie will do very well at MCI. She also needs to smile more because that, is one of her assets.

#3 Sabina- Looked very cute in the official picture. However, she did not have the winner's look and her character did not impress too much. Luckily, her figure saved her, as she has a very long build and can look nice in almost anything. Sabrina faltered slightly during the interview rounds and never elaborated on her answer. Her talent wasn't too amazing either. A provocative dance when done amazingly, will be awarded (MHK Miss Talent 2002 Rubyanne Choi). But if you're just swinging your hips lightly, and moving your arms a little, the program has nothing. During the coronation segment, she did not appear too happy to be placed 3rd. Chin up honey. You were lucky to get 3rd.

#4 Melanie- She is one of the cutest delegates, and has a very sweet smile. However, her hip hop dancing appeared too stiff and unnatural. Her figure was slightly weaker than the others, but has very nice legs.

#5 Sarah- I preferred her physique from the Cover girl contest over this build. She has been on a lot of muscle since (last summer?) & it looked very 'Miss America' instead of the usual body types we see in asian pageants. Her talent was incredible, but the men who helped her shoudl be rewarded as well. She did not have the winner's look.

#6 Alice- She definitely lost in height, and overall she had a great performance. Alice was calm in all segments, but I guess the only thing that caused her to score a bit lower was her talent. She had done a chinese painting at home and only signed it during the event. Most of us wonder if she had really painted the picture, but sources say she did.

#7 Cynthia- Her performance lacked the sparkle, confidence, and most of all, energy. All her movements seemed very SLOW. Cynthia also did not smile enough and her interview seemed very short and not very impressive at all. She has lost a lot of weight since the last press conference, and it was evident where she'd lost it. Nice job! She could have challenged for third.

#8 Kassie- Had a good performance, and likely finished in the top 5. She has the most adorable cheeks. However, her talent wasn't suited for this occasion. But I'm happy she won an award.

#9 Lydia- I was very impressed with her first segment, where she memorized the long introduction of Mandarin. Her talent was very provocative and this obviously didn't move the judges. I really liked her dress for her talent. Rumour went around that she was sick a lot. Poor girl..I hope she will start eating again

#10 Aurelia- has a nice smile, but as Sammi said, her makeup didn't do any justice. She looks pretty in pictures. Her talent was nice & unique. It was rather tiresome to see the numerous dances from the top 10.

Sammi's Final Review

As I watched the Miss Vancouver pagaent over my bowl of cantaloupe, I had a bunch of mixed feelings. First I was disappointed because it wasn't aired live, not to mention watching the pagaent bearing many troubled thoughts, most of which is from the contraversal pagaent board, also worrying whether the girls are still conscious for the pagaent with endless reports of their diets and starvation. I was excited to watch the pagaent, as I was extremely glad with the results (which I predicted quite closely!! YAY!!). The pagaent has passionate "Latino" undertones, but there were no evident themes. When the girls came out, I was shocked to see how thin they were, it sort of felt like they were trying to follow HK's "anorexic" trend (forgive me, but I would prefer voluputious over a "stick" any day). A part that I really enjoyed was the talent segement of the show, where each of them had something amazing to offer, however I must question some of the girls' selections of their talent! One thing that I feel is a big disappointment is the wardrobe, not only did it appear to be plain, but poorly fitted, thus instead of accentuating the girls figures, it very much did the opposite. The two most important pieces of attires in a Chinese pagaent, that being the swimsuit and the cheongsam looked loose and nonadhesive to the body, which in turn did not exactly did what these clothing were suppose to do for most parts. Otherwise, a reasonable production, although at times it seemed sluggish, I have seen better MCV's in the past. One reason that this pagaent seemed dull is because I regret to say that not one particular candidate completely shined throughout the pagaent. Perhaps they lack the vitality (and perhaps energy from hunger?) that girls usually have at pagaents. Here are some individual comments of each of the girls:

1) Olivia by far had the best figure, and did a very impressive dance for the talent part. She deserved to win Miss Talent over anyone else. However she did lack the articulation the award winners had.

2) Annie showed great poise in her opening speech, and carried herself well in all her walks. Although she did stumble in her interview, she provided a very good answer for her question. But the most impressive thing was her talent on the guozen (similar to the Chinese version of a harp), where she showed great elegance and captured the judges hearts from then on. She deserved her place as winner, yet I doubt the Photogenic award, since did I see moments where she appeared uncomfortable. She was only one who looked great in her gown, cheongsam and swimsuit!

3) Sabrina was dubbed one of the favourites entering the pagaent, and she quickly displays herself as a contender for the crown. Although impressive, I felt that choosing a Hawaiian dance as talent for a Chinese pagaent may not be the best way to impress the judges (perhaps too revealing or unsuitable to our culture?). I also felt that her interview could have been better. She did look the best in the evening gown, but definitely didn't have the winner's look.

4)Melanie was one of my favourites and I was hoping that she would place, she had a great smile and looked captivating on camera, however her choice of hip-hop dance and perhaps her figure took her out of the contension.

5)Sarah had great physique, however I did find her to look better in her official picture, because with her hair up it made her neck look really short. I didn't get to see much of her acrobatic talent since the camera never gave a good view (from what I saw on TV it seemed like all the guys were doing the work), therefore I can't seem to appreciate why she would get the talent award, but I am sure it looked much better more impressive live than what I saw on tv.

6)Alice delivered a great performance, she had all the qualities of a winner! She was poised, answered her questions well and also had a great walk. However it was perhaps her talent (hard to convincingly show Chinese painting in a short period of time) and her height caused her the win. I thought she was one of the few that looked good in her swimsuit.

7)Cynthia looked better in her official picture than in action. I almost didn't recognize her! She didn't smile enough and her performance lacked confidence. One of the most interesting thing I noticed is that she always tries to hide her hips in a way or an other (her waist-hip ratio was quitedrastic).

8)Kassie also delivered a good performance, she was confident and energetic and had a great figure. She had a natural presence in from of the camera. However her talent of lip syncing Charlie Chaplin did not strike a chord with the judges.

9)Lydia was very confident. However she wasn't consistent in her performance for a spot on the top 3. I appreciate that she took the effort to memorize her intro in Mandarin, but it wasn't convincing (it sounded like she didn't know what she was talking about) and she should have chosen something more conservative as a talent in front of a panel of Chinese pagaent judges. However the biggest factor of all, she had "I don't know" as a part of her answer (a pagaent NO-NO).

10)Aurelia had a wonderful smile throughout and she seemed like she was enjoying her pagaent experience throughout. Good choice for talent (violin) however I felt that she had a poor choice of makeup (especially around the eyes) which made her look like she had no eyes at all.
